The 50 and 50

The 50 & 50 is the most original SuperTuscan that has been so far created. Its name means that it is composed of half Sangiovese and half Merlot. The originality lies in the fact that the wines to be assembled are made by two different companies: the Sangiovese by Capannelle, in the city of Gajole in Chianti, the Merlot by the Avignonesi in Montepulciano. The reason of the the operation is that in these two areas the vineyards have found soil and microclimate where expressing their full potential.

 Their union gives life to an excellent wine which is clearly noticeable, although it originates from two different soils, both of Tuscany matrix. Born with the 1988 vintage thanks to the friendship between its creator Raffaele Rossetti, owner of Capannelle, with the  brothers Alberto and Ettore Falvo, holders of Avignonesi, the 50 & 50 is produced only in great vintages: in fifteen years have been deliberately missed to the call four thousandths, the 1989, the 1991, the 1994 and the 1996.

Founder of Capannelle since 1975, Raffaele Rossetti sold the company in 1997 to the American entrepreneur James B. Sherwood, president and principal shareholder of Sea Containers and Orient Express Hotels, but the 50 & 50 is not changed for this reason: matured for 18 months in barrel and  and for the remaining 18 months in bottle, it has an intense ruby color, an odor impact where recognize cherry jam and black currant, tobacco, pepper, licorice, leather, vanilla, and in the mouth it is soft, warm, elegant and authoritative. It goes well with roasts, braised , game and tasty and well seasoned cheese.
