The Cirò

The Ciro is one of Calabria's most famous wines. Recognized DOC product in 1969, Ciro is an "historic" wine. The variety of Gaglioppo, which is the grape from which it  is produced the red Ciro, is the same of 20 centuries ago, in the pink of Greek civilization, when they produced the wine Cremissa.

The quality of the wine in question is evidenced by the fact that the Cremissa was offered to athletes returning from the Olympics. The name of the wine derived from the place of wine production; Cremissa was in fact the name of the Greek settlement located near Cirò Marina hilly area where was farmed the vineyard at the basis of Cremissa.
The ancient fame has long undermined improvements and changes, and has turned to a trivialization process typical of all the great southern wines, an so to the standardization of White, Red and Rosè Cirò, with the aggravating of the white grapes addition to Gaglioppo. A situation similar to the Chianti area.

The efforts of some Italian wine merchants have revived the reputation of one of the oldest best Italian wines:  in the best versions the white wine is very pleasant, fruity aroma and yellow floral tones, Rosè savours of cherry and strawberry and the red one has ripe red fruit with spicy nuances aromas.
